Best Dog Halloween Costumes (2026)

Much of the fun of Halloween is dressing up in costumes. For dog owners, this often includes dressing THEM up in costumes as well. Regardless of how you are celebrating the spooky season, bringing along your little superhero, devil, or dog/lobster (yes, there is a costume for that) not only adds to the celebration, but is also a fun way to generate a wealth of images to share online.

If you don’t have the time or inclination (or, speaking personally, skill) to create your own dog costume, there are a wealth of options available for purchase online. Most of these are in the $20-$30 range and ship quickly.

We’ve included over a dozen of our favorite dog costumes here from a variety of online sellers. But first, some things to be aware of when shopping for Halloween costumes for dogs.

A dog Halloween costume should be comfortable

Comfort is a big priority when fitting your pet out with a Halloween costume. A costume should fit well and restrict neither movement nor sight. If the costume involves neck or head pieces, be sure that your dog can also breath with no problems. The bottom line here is that your pet should be able to walk, sit, and lie down comfortably while wearing their costume.

A costume that is the wrong size can also cause discomfort. Pretty much every dog costume you run across online is going to come in a variety of sizes, and most sellers will include a handy size chart to help you get the right fit. Start your costume search by measuring your dog’s neck, chest, and back length. A couple of fingers of space between costume and dog is the sweet spot when it comes to fit.

Keep an eye on the material the suit is made from as well. Something like a cotton or soft polyester will be both more comfortable and breathable, so the suit won’t overheat.

Halloween costumes for dogs should be safe

A costume that is dog-safe should have no small parts on it that can easily be chewed off and choked on. Any plastic straps should be loose enough for your pet to easily move, and yet secure enough so that your dog won’t be snagging everything they walk by.

The costume should have some form of reflective strips or other elements built into it. This is particularly important if you will be showing off your suited cutie out on the street while heading to parties or trick-or-treating. If the suit doesn’t incorporate some form of reflective elements, you can easily buy reflective stripping at your local hardware or box store and add your own.

Consider going with a flame-resistant costume, particularly if you are going to be around bonfires or other flames.

A dog costume should be broken in

While not necessarily for fit, you should still “break in” your pet costume pre-party so that your dog will become accustomed to it. The best way to do this is to build up their exposure. Try the suit on your pet for a couple of minutes first, then gradually build up their tolerance for it with longer sessions. Dispense a few treats during the process, and keep an eye on your dog’s comfort level, particularly if they squirm, pant or pace, freeze or tuck tail… basically anything out of the ordinary. Acclimating your pet to the costume is an important part of the comfort process here.

We added a few additional quick tips at the end of the article, but for now, let’s dive into our favorite costumes! Note that we may receive a small affiliate fee through some of these links that help to keep the website lights on and the puppy treats flowing.

Additional dog costume tips

  • If your dog is still hating the costume after repeated “break in” sessions, it may be the wrong costume for them.
  • Try to go with something that is easy on/easy off. Your pet will hate the costume a lot more if it takes fifteen minutes to suit up.
  • Try to buy from a responsible seller like PetSmart, Chewy, or Petco, both in terms of quality and to avoid toxic materials in the costume.
  • If this is more a long-term investment than a one-off, be sure that the costume can be easily laundered and dried.
  • Limit any costume sessions to under 1-2 hours to maximize comfort and cut down on potential skin irritation, chafing, etc.
